Burren Junction - Tuesday 30 August

Burren Junction is smack in the middle of the wide expanse of western NSW (west of Narrabri) referred to as the "Black Soil Plains". The book by Eric Rolls "A Million Wild Acres" detailing the exploration and settlement of the area is a must read.

Often referred to as "Big Sky Country" the expansive flat landscape is very different to the Northern Rivers where we live.

We stayed with a local farming family, Mick and Sonya Marshall, on their farming property. Their hospitality and friendship were wonderful.

Sonya had organised the meeting at Burren junction and was very nervous about how many people would turn up. She did not need to worry.

Speakers Anne Kennedy, Robert Greenaway, Michael, Emily Colless and Forum Chair Cameron Rowntree

About 130 locals turned up for the community forum to hear a number of speakers. Other speakers, besides Michael, were Anne Kennedy (Great Artesian Basin Protection Group), Emily Colless (NSW Farmers) and Robert Greenaway (Councillor on Walgett Shire Council). The forum was ably chaired by local farmer Cameron Rowntree.

We attended a school Bush Dance that night that was jointly organised by Burren Junction and Rowens Public Schools for students and their families.

It was a hoot and we even had a dance.

The morning after Mick and Sonya took us for a drive around their farm. We enjoyed seeing a working farm and left horrified at the prospect of coal seam gas exploration and extraction impacting on the area.

From Burren Junction we heaeded off on our way to Coonamble.

Cheers
Michael & Julie
